HABS 100 YEARS IN DANGER . . . MARTY A SAINT?

March 20th, 2009

In the Montreal Canadiens 100th year anniversary there was suppose to be celebrations and All Star festivals that included the rich history of the hockey club.

The Habs were suppose to after last season surprise showing be a Stanley Cup contender this year with their great young talent. Bob Gainey the former Habs great who was now thought to be putting together the final touches on the talent with his long time buddy coach Guy Carbonneau.

Fast forward to the season where it’s literally been one issue after another from goaltending woes with Carey Price to criminal allegations from the Montreal media against players. Montreal is a hockey hot bed that is not always all that intelligent with several media and fans alike calling for the upheaval of the roster to land the thought to be available Vincent Lecavalier.

At the moment this Montreal club is fighting to stay alive with the General Manger now as head coach and the team looking like 23 deers with their eyes in the headlights. If last nights loss to the lowly Ottawa Senators was any indication of what’s to come I would say if they don’t pull their heads out of there asses by the weekend it could be all she wrote for the Habs.

With Florida winning last night against the Leafs (3-1) and Carolina playing better and winning both teams could have the very real possibility of unseating the Habs.

Canadiens (36-26-9) are now in seventh in the NHL’s Eastern Conference, only a point up on the ninth-place Florida Panthers, who would currently not qualify for the playoffs.

“It just felt like the opportune time to get the momentum of the game changed,” Habs coach and general manager Bob Gainey said after the game. SAY WHAT? I have coached in a lot of games and I’m left scratching my head to what that even really means?

This has went from a celebration year to a disaster season that could cost GM Gainey his profile and job in Montreal and has already cost the coach his title.

Take a look at this roster of players that Gainey for one reason or another has allowed to go into their final seasons as Habs Free Agents. This undoubtedly has an effect on the players psyche’s going forward throughout the season with all the unknown. We have commented before how Gainey allowed Sheldon Souray, Mark Striet power play defenceman to just walk away now this list:

KOIVU HABS CAPTAIN , KOVALEV, TANGUAY, LANG, KOMISAREK, SCHNEIDER, KOSTOPOULOS, BRISEBOIS, DANDENAULT ALL OF THEM HAVE CONTRACTS THAT EXPIRE AT THE END OF THE SEASON MAKING THEM FREE AGENTS WITH THE ABILITY TO WALK AWAY FROM MONTREAL.

These are not moves that are going to win you any General Manger of the year awards!

MARTY AIN’T NO SAINT

The guy broke records with the New Jersey Devils and is a great goalie but he also has a big mouth writing years ago about  former NHLPA Director Bob Goodneow questioning his decisions while the boss at the PA.

Well that’s not only rich on one account because it was Goodneow that helped drive up salaries which Marty B has quite happily profited from and with the settlement his ex-wife just got in court it’s a good thing. According to the Trenton, N.J wire service  . . . . .

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Days after breaking the NHL record for wins by a goalie, the Devils’ Martin Brodeur has been dealt an alimony setback by a New Jersey appeals court.

The court ruled that Brodeur must pay his ex-wife $500,000 a year until 2020.

Brodeur appealed, asking that he only be required to pay alimony until he retires, which he estimated to be in 2012. DuBois asked for alimony payments until 2024, when their youngest is anticipated to graduate from college.

The court ordered Brodeur to pay alimony until 2020, the year the youngest child graduates high school.

“Here, the parties always agreed that (the) plaintiff would serve as the full-time caretaker of the children,” the court wrote. “In order to do so, she requires financial support and defendant earns sufficient income to effectuate the plan.”

A lower court originally awarded Brodeur’s ex-wife, Melanie DuBois, permanent alimony.

In addition to alimony, DuBois was awarded $132,000 in annual child support and more than $9 million in other assets.

The couple married in August 1995. According to court records, the marriage ended after Brodeur admitted to having an affair with his sister-in-law, who was living with the Brodeurs to help take care of their four children. DuBois filed for divorce in May 2003.

“There is no formula for alimony. This was a situation that dealt with her ability to earn,” said DuBois’ attorney Beatrice Kandell. “The lifestyle that was created during the marriage made it clear that she needed to be supported until she ceased to be the full-time caretaker of the children.”
